ABA-based Exercise Interventions
At Spectrum Strength Fitness, we specialize in ABA-based exercise interventions, a unique approach that combines the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) with customized fitness programs. Our Movement-Based Programming integrates the principles of ABA with a holistic approach to physical fitness and well-being. This program is designed to provide evidence-based exercise interventions tailored to the unique needs, goals, and abilities of neurodivergent individuals and their families.
Our approach emphasizes:
1. Individualized Assessment:
- We assess each person's specific physical, cognitive and adaptive abilities to create a customized exercise program.
Physical: to what level can the athlete perform the specific exercise?
Adaptive: how motivated is he/she to perform the exercise?
Cognitive: how best will they learn the exercises with relation to language and instruction?
2. Setting Measurable Goals:
- Clear, achievable objectives are defined to guide physical activity and fitness progress.
- Examples: Increase the duration of continuous aerobic activity like jogging or jumping jacks for 1 minute; Complete 3 sets of 10 chest push-presses with proper form; Participate in 90% of scheduled exercise sessions without refusal or escape behaviours.
3. Skill development:
- We focus on building foundational movement skills, strength, endurance, coordination, and motor planning
- Exercises are broken down into smaller, manageable steps to facilitate learning and mastery.
4. Reinforcement and motivation:
- By incorporating preferred activities, positive reinforcement, and achievable goals, we create a supportive environment that encourages consistent participation and progress
5. Prompting and Fading:
- Appropriate guidance and support to help individuals perform exercises correctly, gradually reducing assistance as they gain proficiency. Example: use of physical prompt (hand on hand, hand on elbow, shadowing, mirroring, independence)
6. Data Collection and Monitoring:
- Using ABA techniques, we systematically track and evaluate progress to ensure meaningful outcomes and adapt programming as needed, allowing for data-driven adjustments to optimize the program's effectiveness.
Our movement-based programming goes beyond traditional exercise by incorporating sensory integration, functional movement patterns, and family collaboration, empowering individuals to achieve their full potential in a supportive, inclusive environment. Whether the goal is improving fitness, enhancing coordination, or fostering confidence, we are committed to making movement accessible and enjoyable for all.
